My name is Wendy Gaylord and I believe the majority of issues stopping people from living their lives fully are normal, understandable and treatable.
This belief, along with my compassionate nature (and a few challenges in my own life) is what lead me to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a psychotherapist and marriage counselor.
I have 35 years of experience working in private practice, mental health clinics, hospitals, elementary schools, middle and high schools, juvenile facilities, homes, courtrooms and community-based organizations.
I try my best to create a safe, confidential and supportive space for our work together. During our sessions, we will …
⁃ Learn about you and your emotional and relationship history;
⁃ Explore emotions that are often hidden;
⁃ Work to better understand behaviors and why you react the way you do in certain situations;
⁃ Learn coping skills that you can utilize at any time for the rest of your life;
⁃ Create positive changes that will last; and,
⁃ Improve relationships with others AND yourself.
As I mentioned, life has dealt me some challenges. A friend called these events “big freaking growth experiences.” (Sometimes it feels good to chuckle about painful stuff, especially when it is in the past.)
My husband and I have had struggles in our relationship. Both our parents divorced after 25 years of marriage, leaving us wondering what a good marriage even looks like. We went to marriage counseling, and then years later we went again, and AGAIN! And I am proud to say we are still married, happily, 34 years later.
At age 43, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. A few years later, I spent my 50th birthday with our oldest son in the Intensive Care Unit after he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury.
I’m not sharing these intimate details for sympathy. Far from it. These life-altering events have strengthened my belief in our fundamental ability, with support, to heal and triumph through life’s challenges. My experience has made me even more passionate about helping people work through issues that are hard to face, cope with traumatic events and build internal and external supports.
But it’s not all about work. I’m a mother of four, a nature-lover, hiker, skier, devoted yoga practitioner, woodworker, and former New York fashion executive. I ground myself in the mountains of Colorado and the lakes of the Adirondacks.
It’s difficult to ask for help, but if you’re reading this you’ve already shown the courage and resourcefulness to have come this far toward feeling better.
Research shows the number one factor determining success for clients in therapy is the relationship between client and therapist, you and me.
I invite you to schedule a time to meet, at no charge, so you can decide if working with me is a good fit for you.
